Hemingway once wrote a story in just six words (“For sale: baby shoes, never worn.”) and is said to have called it his best work.

In reality there are two ways we can define websites. They’re either Fun Parks or Central Business Districts.
Startup blog definitions:
Fun park: A website which is primarily in existence for the entertainment of its users. A place to enjoy, socialize, have fun and waste time.
Central Business District (CBD): A website which has a commercial function from it’s inception and is essentially there to assist people in trade.
Examples of each include:
Fun parks | CBD’s |
Youtube |
Ebay |
|
Paypal |
Flickr |
Amazon |
Hot or not |
Lulu |
Sure, there’s some overlap, but it’s the insights behind the two variants that matter.
Fun parks are ‘fun’. They’re easy to use and addictive in nature. They tend to spread quicker and go viral because there’s less risk. We’re not being asked to spend money, just enjoy the rides. So the fun park fills up quickly, gets popular and the owners monetize them by selling advertising billboards to all the eyeballs in the fun park. Eventually the park becomes overcrowded and people start to leave. They tend to have a rotating user base.
CBD’s are useful. Sometimes fun, but usually more serious and offer ‘value’. The commercial function is built in to the site, hence it doesn’t need to ‘monetize’ itself. People tend to investigate more, take longer to put their name down and join site. But once the do, they often become evanaglists and do the marketing for the site. They build more slowly, maybe take years, but usually end up with a more loyal user base. And rightfully end up more profitable. (profit as defined by yield)
Both are valid, both are evolving. If you’re a start up, it just pays to know which category you fit into.
Can be a huge time waster. The irony for us in startup land is that it’s our job to stay informed.
Startup blog advice: If you need to stay on top of a broad topic find a good aggregator.
Someone who’ll cover stuff when it becomes important enough for you to know. Seth Godin does this for me as far as web 2.0 and new marketing is concerned. Startup blog does this for you as far as keeping your mind thinking as an entrepreneur should.

As seen on TV Google…
Back in the halcyon days of the TV industrial complex, an oft used selling point was the fact that something was actually on TV.
The thinking went something like this:
It built a sense of trust. Trust that evolved from assumed scale.
Guess what? It’s back! Only this time it’s ‘as seen on front page of Google’.
The new thinking isn’t too different:
The cool thing about this for start ups, is that it really only takes an investment in time and thinking to get there. Not a big media buy.
HEMA is a Dutch department store. The first store opened on November 4, 1926, in Amsterdam.
Now there are 150 stores all over the Netherlands. HEMA also has stores in Belgium, Luxemburg, and Germany.
Take a look at HEMA’s product page (switch sound on first).
You can’t order anything and it’s in Dutch but just wait a couple of seconds and watch what happens.

Startups – get Wow !
It seems that the National Heart Foundation just can’t help themselves. They’ve put the next nail in the coffin of the brand that was the once respected National Heart Foundation Tick.
A logo which once upon a time meant the food it appeared on was healthy.
If the Mcdonalds disaster wasn’t enough last year. Then surely they’re getting very close to the tipping point now.
By endorsing a certain pizza chain’s pizza, they are saying:
“Oh well, people eat junk food, so we thought we’d recommend the best of a bad lot”
Brands are never about ‘content’ they are about ‘context’. So what if this particlar pizza has less salt and fat? The association with fast food wont change the opinion of pizza, just marginalise the heart tick. Our world view on pizza is already formed.
You can read more about it here.
“If you can’t beat them, join them” ?
Startup blog says: such a mentality is a sure way for you and your brand to be absorbed into nothingness.
