The 55 cent courier

Here’s a tip to save costs while bootstrapping a business. It’s a 55c courier service with guaranteed overnight delivery. Yep – it’s pretty amazing. They have drop off locations on most streets in convenient little red boxes See photo below). They have all sorts of packaging formats from enveloped to special DVD boxes. They also deliver direct to the door of your desired destination. Just awesome value. They’re called Australia post.

So why would any entrepreneur waste their most valuable asset (time) driving around to drop stuff off, or spend a ridiculous amount of money on a same day courier to deliver something which can most certainly wait a day, is beyond me.

  1. Picking up the phone is great to build rapport with potential clients. 🙂

Its personal and means you value the relationship, you can’t show much emotion through a letter.

  2. Your comments are valid for sure. In addition the phone should always be preferred to an email. The blog post here thought, is more about – delivery of stuff vs using couriers or doing it yourself!

    Thanks for commenting.
    Steve.

  3. It would still cost you more for a larger item, I believe even one of the DVD boxes is more like $1.00 which is still much better value then a same day courier.

I guess it all depends on what it is and the time frame really.

  4. And you can even get AusPost to pickup if you have regular outgoing items — saves even the walk/drive to the post box. I have them swing by three times a week and they’re proving to be more reliable — and way cheaper — than any of the many courier companies i’ve used.

  5. Wow Steve, as a same day courier company in the UK am er surprised at your comments!!… Of course if you are sending a birthday card to your Aunty Dora you’d be well advised not to use a same day courier, you could make a big saving to be sure….but..would you send a Tender worth potentially millions through the post, or the first proof of a new print project for a potentially massive new client, an urgent blood sample for analysis, a widget for the machine thats gone down costing ???? in lost production… I suppose they could all wait until sometime tommorow, and I suppose a Proof of Delivery is not really nescessary, not knowing exactly where your consignment really is if it hasnt arrived wont really matter and if it does get lost you wont be insured…….. but I agree … ITS CHEAPER TO POST IT!!!!!!
