The answer is you must do ‘something’ you enjoy. Something meaning ‘projects’.
Find projects you love then stopping work, retiring and getting rich become irrelevant.

Now I realise that I want to have the skills and wisdom to be able to deal with whatever life throws at me
You need them both – the thing that you love (Passion) and the skills to turn what you love into a way of making a life.
