Thought starter

Quite often I’ll be looking for a business solution. A solution to a problem. But most times I really don’t know what I am looking for until I find it. But when I see, hear it, or touch it, I know it’s exactly what I need. If I waited to start until I knew what I wanted, I think rarely would I find a solution at all.

I know it sounds crazy, but I really think we should get started before we know what we are looking for.

  1. Steve! Spot on there! I’m hearing you! It’s better to act then to stay still.
I have this mentality at times yet usually get frowned upon as it’s not strategic enough!
Now you’ve said it, it feels ok for me too! 😉 woop

  2. I agree. I imagine this approach would not be supported in the corporate world, but for an agile startup, having a lot of malleability is crucial.

Inspiration for new features or improvements are much more likely to come during progress. The problem is deciding which ones to include, otherwise one could get stuck in an infinite loop of development and never releasing!

  3. Paul Saffo calls this “Ready, Fire, Steer”

I blogged about this in http://www.skmurphy.com/blog/2007/01/09/paul-saffo-best-strategy-is-ready-fire-steer/ the original quote is from a July 21, 2006 interview with Richard Edelman “How to Mobilize the New Players on the field”

“Best strategy used to be ready, aim, fire. Now the best strategy is ready, fire, steer. Put supplies where you might need them on the journey. Just get into the right neighborhood and you will find the address.”
